1. Types of visa

Chinese visa could be divided into diplomatic visa, courtesy visa, official visa and ordinary visa. Among them, ordinary visa could be divided into types showed below.

Issued to foreign crew members of means of international transportation, including aircraft, trains and ships, or motor vehicle drivers engaged in cross-border transport activities, or to the accompanying family members of the crew members of the above-mentioned ships.

D

Issued to those who intend to reside in China permanently.

F

Issued to those who intend to go to China for exchanges, visits,study tours and other activities.

G

Issued to those who intend to transit through China.

J1

Issued to resident foreign journalists of foreign news organizations stationed in China. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

J2

Issued to foreign journalists who intend to go to China for short-term news coverage. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

L

Issued to those who intend to go to China as a tourist.

M

Issued to those who intend to go toChina for commercial and trade activities.

Q1

Issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care. The intended duration of stay inChinaexceeds 180 days.

"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law. 

Q2

Issued to those who intend to visit their relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence in China. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.

R

Issued to those who are high-level talents or whose skills are urgently needed in China.

S1

Issued to those who intend to go to China to visit the foreigners working or studying in China to whom they are spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law,or to those who intend to go to Chinaf or other private affairs. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

S2

Issued to those who intend to visit their family members who are foreigners working or studying in  China,or to those who intend to go to China for other private matters. The intended duration of stay inChinais no more than 180 days.

"family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.

X1

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

X2

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.

Z

Issued to those who intend to work in China.

2.Application for a visa

Foreigners coming to China could apply for diplomatic, courtesy, official or ordinary visa in Chinese visa-granting office in foreign countries including embassy, consulate in foreign countries or other organizations authorized by diplomatic departments which could issue visa in foreign countries. According to related regulations, foreigners could also apply for port visa from port visa-granting office authorized by Ministry of Public Security but they are required to enter from the port where they applied for port visa.

3. Change and extension of the visa

After the foreigners enter China, if they want to stay in China not for the diplomatic or official reason, they could apply for the change and extension of the visa and other residence certificate from the entry&exit management institution of Ministry of  Public Security according to related rules.

4. Application for residence permit

If a foreigner holds a visa with indication that it needs residence permit, he should apply for it from entry&exit management institution of Ministry of Public Security of the planned residence within 30 days.

Welcome to the ancient city of Xi’an, for your smooth journey, please read the following notice carefully:

(1) Foreigners are required to register after they come into China according to regulations.

①Foreigners who reside in hotel are required to check in at the hotel according to public security management regulations of hotel industry.

②Foreigners who reside in anywhere except hotels are required to register in the public security organizations of his residence place in person or by the person who put them up.

③If the foreigners with the residence permit leave their permanent residence to other place to reside, they are required to register according to the above regulation.

(2)Foreigners holding the Z、X1、J1、S1 or Q visa are required to apply for the residence permit in entry&exit management institution of Ministry of Public Security at municipal level. Foreigners with residence permit could cross the border for several times without applying for visa.

(3) Foreigners holding the F、L、G、C、J2、M、Q2、R、S2 or X2 visa could stay in China within the valid period of visa. If they want to extend the period of stay, they are required to apply for the Visa extension in entry&exit management institution of Xi’an Public Security

(4) Foreigners with the residence permit not for employment or work reason can not work in China.

(5) Foreigners staying or residing in China are required to carry passport in case of inspection at any time.

(6)Foreigners whose passport or other certificate is lost or stolen are required to report a case to police station and later to transact the exit formality in entry&exit management institution ofMinistry of  Public Security at municipal level with Receipt of Case Report issued by the local police station.

(7) For your safety and property security concern, please follow the safety precaution measures below:

①Take care of your personal property and important certificates and do not expose your belongings in public.

②Take safe vehicles, such as the vehicles provided by hotels, companies or your friends or taxi with qualification of transportation when you go out, and take care of your personal belongings when you walk along the road or take a motorcycle.

③Do not do the illegal activates such as pornography, gamble or narcotics to avoid being kidnapped or robbed.

④Do not change foreign currencies illegally in case of fraud by the currencies being stealthily substituted even by being robbed.

⑤In case of emergency, please call 110.

(8) The Chinese government protects the legal rights of foreigners. Foreigners are required to obey the laws of China when they stay in China, or they would be punished according to the related laws.
