Guidance for Xi’an Public Transportation


1. Urban public transport

Fast and convenient urban public transport is the principal mean of transportation for citizens. As so far ,Xi’an had 252 public transportation lines, 8128 vehicles for public transportation, and an annual passenger capacity of 174 million . The construction of subway has made new progress, for instance, subway line subway line 1line2line 3 have been under operation. Subway line 4, line 5 and line 6 are under construction and network operation of subway has achieved apparent effect.

2. Bus lines

So far, Xi’an has 8100 buses in total, 255 bus lines, with a total length of 6000 km. The bus lines extend to all directions, bus access rate to towns reaches 100% and 97% for administrative villages, enabling you to go any place ofXi’an. The buses are generally classified into 3 categories:
General buses: RMB 1 per ticket for the entire journey, mostly pay-to-the-driver buses. Passengers have to prepare small changes as no changes are returned to passengers.
Air-conditioning (AC) buses: RMB 2 per ticket for the entire journey, mostly pay-to-the-driver buses. The price is indicated on the buses, passengers could inquire conductors that are available on certain AC buses. As for pay-to-the-driver AC buses, passengers have to prepare small changes as no changes are returned to passengers, while changes are returned for buses that have conductors.
Small and medium-sized buses: they are fast, have relatively intensive stations, and stop at back streets where large buses do not reach. These buses are equipped with conductors. The ticket price is RMB 0.5 for the first 3 stops and additional RMB 0.5 per four stops thereafter. The price varies from RMB 3 to RMB 5 depending on the length of journey. 

3. Subway

Xi’an subway commenced to be constructed on Sept 29, 2006. The first line was opened for operation on Sept 16, 2011, making Xi’an the first city in the west region of China to have subway, the 10th city in mainland China for subway operation, and the 9th city mainland China to have large-volume rail transit system that has multi-line transfer networking. Now, subway line 1line2line 3 have been under operation. Subway line 4, line 5 and line 6 are under construction.

4. Taxi

So far, Xi’an has over 14000 taxis mainly in two types, namely green taxis, accounting for the majority of taxis (gas displacement less or equal to 1.8L), whose starting price on the day is RMB 6 and RMB 1.5 per km, and the starting price in the night is RMB 7; black taxis, accounting for the minority of taxis (gas displacement higher than 1.8L), whose starting price on the day is RMB 8 and RMB 2.4 per km, and the starting price in the night is RMB 9.
Note: ① Besides the price indicated in the pricing monitor, extra RMB1 has to be charged as fixed invoice fee forShaanxitransportation industry.

 ② Shifting time for taxi (1600——18:00), it is not easy to call a taxi at peak time and bustling areas.

5. Shuttle buses for tourists

Xi’an bus network has several shuttle buses for tourists, convenient for tourists to reach various scenic spots.  


6. Public bicycles

The public bicycle services system of Xi’an has begun to take shape. So far, there are over 30000 bicycles available, the service area

reaches over 450 square km, and the daily use volume shall exceed 150000 persons. Short distance connection issues are specifically resolved among subway, bus stations and residence areas, the traffic jam in urban area is alleviated, the transport structure of citizens is improved, and green transport is advocated.

7. City card (Chang’an card)

Chang’an card is of versatile and uniform use, which applies to buses, subways and public bicycles that offer discounts. Chang’an card has several types, of which general card is mostly used, simple to obtain, without necessity of certificates, registration of names or report of loss. RMB 18 is merely required to obtain such card. The minimum charge denomination is RMB 10, and RMB 1000 tops, and the sales, recharge, replacement and return of cards could be handled at any service network. Sales of cards and recharge services are available at any permitted network by bus companies, telecommunication business offices, Xi’an bank networks, CBC networks and convenience stations.
